Newcastle United headed into their Championship clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers with their confidence high after a five-match winning streak.

But the Magpies were brought back to earth with a bump after Wolves – smarting from a 4-0 midweek loss – defeated Rafa Benitez’s men 2-0 at St James’ Park.

An own goal from Newcastle centre-back Chancel Mbemba and a strike from Helder Costa ensured Wolves headed home with all three points, while Newcastle fans were left to bemoan some bad luck and some poor individual performances.

One player that failed to have any significant impact on the game was attacking midfielder Mohamed Diame, who was making his fifth league appearance of the season.

The 29-year-old arrived at St James’ Park in the summer but he has registered just a single assist to date and must do better or risk slipping out of contention.
