Some Newcastle United fans on Twitter believe that Mo Diame will be leaving the club this summer.

The 31-year-old midfielder gave an interview to The Chronicle on Monday and revealed an impasse between him and Newcastle by way of contract negotiations.

Diame, out of contract this summer, wants a two-year extension but revealed that the Magpies weren’t keen on the idea.

He said: “I spoke with the club, and when we were talking about my contract, I asked for two years, and they don’t want that. Because we know what they want for this club; it’s difficult to get an extension when you are over 30 here.

“It’s not a problem for me; it’s football and part of the job. If I get the opportunity to stay, I will stay. And, if not, I will go somewhere else and enjoy my football.”

Rafael Benitez could trigger an automatic one-year extension if Diame starts two of United’s last three Premier League games, though he has only made Benitez’s first XI once in the past five weeks.

Here’s how Newcastle fans responded to his blunt comments:

This time last year, Diame, who joined the North-East side in 2016, was revered by most Newcastle fans after playing a huge role in helping them win their Premier League relegation battle.

He hasn’t been as influential this time around, but he remains a popular figure among a lot of supporters, though these comments are a somewhat ominous indication regarding his future.
