Newcastle United have made just the one move this summer as manager Rafael Benitez again fights for financial backing, but that hasn’t stopped one of the most bizarre rumours of the summer.

The Magpies have snapped up loan goalkeeper Marvin Dubravka on a permanent basis from Sparta Prague having impressed since January, but after a top 10 finish, fans are expecting promising additions.

So far, Newcastle have been quiet even in terms of transfer rumours too, but one recent report claims the Magpies are interested in making a stunning signing this summer.

The Mirror reported just days ago that Newcastle are one of five clubs to have registered an interest in signing Borussia Dortmund playmaker Mario Gotze, along with Arsenal, Everton, Leicester City and West Ham United.

It’s claimed that Newcastle have made ‘tentative enquiries’ about signing Gotze, with Dortmund looking to charge around £18million for the attacking midfielder this summer.

Gotze, 26, was set for stardom with Dortmund before a 2013 move to Bayern, and he then scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, becoming a German hero.

However, Gotze lost his way under Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti, was sold back to Dortmund last summer, and then missed out on the Germany World Cup squad after a disappointing season.

Despite his struggles, Newcastle fans simply aren’t buying the rumours, with many taking to Twitter to react with bemusement, suggesting that there’s more chance of Saudi Arabia winning the World Cup than Gotze signing for Newcastle, suggesting he would be a ‘dream’ signing under Mike Ashley.
