Newcastle United were quiet on transfer deadline, but they saw one of their former players join Barcelona in striker Luuk de Jong.

Steve Bruce will be frustrated with the lack of signings his side have made this summer, with Joe Willock the only major addition.

He would have no doubt loved another striker, but some would have been a little confused if he had made a move for De Jong.

The Dutch target man joined Newcastle on loan in 2014, failing to score in 12 appearances before heading back to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Fast forward seven years and De Jong has now joined Barcelona. Ronald Koeman wanted another striker, and in comes De Jong from Spanish rivals Sevilla.

The 31-year-old only scored 10 goals in 69 league games for Sevilla, but he has still managed to land himself an unbelievable move to the Camp Nou.

Unsurprisingly, Newcastlte fans are absolutely baffled to see one Newcastle’s notable flops in recent times join one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Some wondered if their eyes were playing tricks on them as De Jong secured his late move, claiming that anything is possible.

Others suggested that De Jong barely looked fit to tie his own laces at Newcastle, so are wondering how on earth he’s found his way to Barcelona.

There were others claiming that the move is ‘unreal’, questioning whether Newcastle are cursed as De Jong clearly has talent but Newcastle never saw the best of it.=
