According to the Telegraph, Dwight Gayle is set to see out his contract at Newcastle United.

The 30-year-old striker has just one year left on his current deal, and many expected him to push for a move away this summer after barely featuring for the club last season.

Gayle started just 10 times in the league. The Englishman had a very good end to the campaign as he scored four goals and picked up an assist in Newcastle’s last eight league games.

Record-signing Joelinton has had a poor debut campaign in England. The Brazilian was used to playing with another striker next to him in Germany, but Steve Bruce used him alone up top and it didn’t quite work out.

A new striker will be high on Newcastle’s wish list in this summer’s transfer window. With their ownership status still up in the air, the Magpies might not be as adventurous as they would have liked in the market.

A proven goal-scorer will definitely not come cheap and, as a result, Bruce might just have to do with what he currently has at his disposal.

Should Newcastle keep Gayle?

Gayle, by no means, will help Newcastle to glory, but he is capable of getting a few goals on his day. Four strikes and an assist in an eight-game period is a decent record in the Premier League, and him staying might not be such a bad idea after all.

However, with just a year left on his deal, he will be a free agent in less than 12 months, and the Magpies will miss out on good money if they decide to keep hold of him this summer.

Some Newcastle fans want him out immediately but others feel that he could add some value to their squad next season, considering that he had the best return among all their strikers last term.
