Newcastle United are still without a home win this season after a 0-0 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday evening.

The Magpies lost at Liverpool last weekend, but were hoping to take points from a direct rival when Brighton arrived at St James’ Park.

Steve Bruce saw his side struggle in the first half though, and Brighton could have been in front having carved out some fine openings, but Newcastle missed golden chances of their own through Miguel Almiron and Joelinton.

The second half saw Newcastle come back into the game a little more, but they still couldn’t find the breakthrough, and had Fabian Schar to thank for an acrobatic goal-line clearance to deny Aaron Connolly.

Bruce will have plenty to think about after this missed opportunity, and he may be looking to rework his midfield after Jonjo Shelvey’s performance.

Shelvey struggled throughout, appeared to be lacking real energy and gave the ball away far too frequently, before being substituted for Ki Sung-yueng.

Having been regularly left out by Rafael Benitez last season, Shelvey has been given a chance by Bruce, but really isn’t taking it – and fans have been criticising him on Twitter.

Some never want to see Shelvey play for Newcastle again or simply want him sold, believing that he’s shown exactly why Benitez wasn’t picking him in the first place, and ‘dreadful’ displays like yesterday’s show that his time at St James’ Park is done.
