A number of Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to praise Federico Fernandez after the defender made his debut for the Magpies in their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at St James’ Park.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into the game still looking for their first league win of the campaign, and many of the fans would have been forgiven for fearing that that winless run would continue as the teamsheet revealed that both Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey would not feature against the Blues.

Newcastle’s tactics for the game became clear early on, as they attempted to frustrate the visitors with their defensive efforts. And for much of the fixture, it appeared that the strategy may pay off.

The game reached the final 15 minutes before the first goal was scored. A very controversial penalty decision against Fabian Schar allowed Eden Hazard to break the deadlock from the spot. Newcastle would equalise thanks to a brilliant header from Joselu, but their joy was short-lived.

Marcos Alonso’s drilled effort was turned into his own net by DeAndre Yedlin to leave Newcastle just outside the bottom three, with just one point coming from their opening three games.

It was another disappointing afternoon for the Magpies, but Fernandez’s debut display led to plenty of praise on social media. The 29-year-old performed extremely well given that Lascelles was not alongside him at the heart of the defence, and the supporters were extremely happy with their first glimpse of the Argentinian.
