Newcastle United fans on Twitter are calling on Rafael Benitez to reward the free-scoring form of Elias Sorensen by promoting him to the first team.

The 19-year-old marksman made it 18 for the season by scoring for Newcastle reserves in last night’s Checkatrade Trophy win over Sol Campbell’s Macclesfield Town.

Sorensen fired the Magpies ahead on 23 minutes by converting an excellent cross from Liam Gibson.

In doing so, the Danish sensation has now managed 14 goals in his last 11 youth outings, and Newcastle fans want him involved in the senior set-up soon.

If we’re honest, the United supporters might be right. Can he really be that much worse than Joselu, or Ayoze Perez to a lesser extent?

Joselu has managed six goals for Newcastle in 41 Premier League outings following a £6 million move from Stoke City 18 months ago, while Perez was booed by his own fans as Benitez’s side lost 3-0 at St James’s Park this past weekend.

Some might say that Sorensen’s goals at youth level mean nothing as far as senior football goes, and it’s true to a certain extent when you consider Adam Armstrong’s form for the reserves in recent years, but 18 goals is an outstanding return.

He is clearly too good for Under-23 level and if Benitez doesn’t give him first-team chances then he must loan him out in January at the very least.
