That setback meant the Magpies have now picked up just one point from their last two matches, and manager Rafa Benitez will know the importance of getting back to winning ways in the league as soon as possible.
Newcastle will be kicking themselves after not holding out against a Villa side that has struggled since slipping out of the top flight along with the Magpies last season.
That said, one Newcastle player in particular who impressed was American international DeAndre Yedlin, whose good play lead to the visitors’ opener.
The right-back has had to wait patiently for his chances to impress at St James’ Park but on this evidence he will give Vurnon Anita a run for his money between now and May.
