David De Gea shone in Manchester United’s Champions League draw, but Newcastle United fans were not quite as impressed.
Newcastle fans took to Twitter after Manchester United’s Champions League clash with Sevilla on Wednesday to hit back at claims made by several fans that David De Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world.
United go into the second-leg of their last 16 tie level at 0-0, but they largely had De Gea to thank for keeping them in the game as he made a string of fine saves throughout the contest, including one from point blank range just before the break.
It was a brilliant performance from the Premier League side’s goalkeeper and would have strengthened many fans’ belief that he is the best stopper on the planet at the moment.
However, that is not the case for some Newcastle fans. Jose Mourinho’s men’s last top flight game came at St James’ Park where Rafa Benitez’s side caused something of an upset as Matt Ritchie scored to give the Magpies a hugely valuable three points.
Ritchie may have scored, but one of the displays that really caught the headlines was the performance of January signing Martin Dubravka, who was making his debut for Newcastle in the win.
Dubravka produced several fine stops to keep the away side at bay, and that has prompted the Newcastle fans to take to Twitter after Manchester United’s European stalemate to suggest that De Gea is not quite on the 29-year-old’s level just yet.
