Newcastle United have been linked with a surprise move for David Wagner.
Newcastle United may have backed Rafael Benitez in the January transfer window, but his future remains less than secure at St James Park.
The Magpies allowed Benitez to splash the cash on Atlanta United playmaker Miguel Almiron, who could make his debut against Wolves tonight.
Monaco left back Antonio Barreca also came in, handing Benitez two key signings in a pivotal transfer window not only for the club’s survival chances, but also for Benitez’s future.
Benitez’s contract as Newcastle manager expires this summer, and there has been something of a stand-off between the Spaniard and owner Mike Ashley.
Basically, Benitez wouldn’t commit to a new deal until signings were landed, and Ashley wouldn’t sanction big deals until Benitez committed his future to the club.
Almiron’s deal has many believing that Benitez may now stay, but The Times report that Newcastle are still considering other managers in case Benitez does go, with David Wagner a prime candidate.
The German recently left Huddersfield Town in a shock departure, having been a hero with the Terriers, winning promotion in 2017 before keeping them in the Premier League last season.
Wagner has been hailed in recent years for his work at Huddersfield, but Newcastle fans aren’t impressed with the rumour, with a couple of fans comparing him to Alan Pardew.
Others simply believe that Wagner wouldn’t be good enough for Newcastle anyway, never mind as a direct successor to Benitez, with many preferring Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers.
