Newcastle United fans are enduring a difficult summer, and former striker Michael Chopra has stood up and made himself counted in the fight against Mike Ashley.

The Magpies have seen manager Rafael Benitez move on after his contract expired in June, and the blows have kept coming since then.

A takeover seems unlikely now, Ayoze Perez has been sold to Leicester City, Salomon Rondon won’t be returning and Steve Bruce is now the top target to replace Benitez.

Bruce may be a boyhood Newcastle fan, but he’s had a patchy record in the Championship in recent times, and his history as Sunderland manager hasn’t gone down well either.

Fans are fuming with owner Ashley, as has been the case for most of the last 10 years now, but many former players have been supporting his decisions.

Now though, ex-striker Chopra has shared his feelings, telling talkSPORT that owner Ashley is a ‘disease’ and his reign only gets worse and worse as time passes.

Newcastle-born Chopra has the club at heart, and continued with his criticism by suggesting that ‘mediocre’ Bruce simply isn’t good enough for Newcastle.

Fans have responded by calling Chopra a ‘legend’ for speaking out when many others haven’t, branding his comments ‘spot on’ and ‘unreal.
