Former Newcastle United striker Seydou Doumbia scored for Basel against Arsenal on Tuesday night.

Arsenal coasted to victory over FC Basel in their final Champions League group stage game on Tuesday night, but did concede to a superb goal from Seydou Doumbia.

The Gunners were vying for top spot in Group A as they travelled to Switzerland, whilst Paris Saint-Germain were on the road at Bulgarian side Ludogorets.

Arsenal did their part with a 4-1 thumping of Basel thanks to a hat-trick from Lucas Perez and a strike from Alex Iwobi, and with PSG only drawing 2-2 at Ludogorets, Arsene Wegner’s men sealed top spot in Group A.

Basel’s late goal proved to be little more than a consolation, but it came from striker Seydou Doumbia, who spent time on loan at Newcastle United last season.

A deadline day signing from Roma in February, Doumbia – who had hit 95 goals in 150 games for CSKA Moscow – was seen as the man to help Newcastle stay in the Premier League by scoring goals for Steve McClaren’s side.

However, the Ivorian made little to no impact at St. James’ Park, playing just three times for Newcastle as they suffered relegation from the Premier League to the Championship.

Doumbia returned to Roma last summer and penned a loan deal with Basel, where he has now smashed ten goals in 18 games, with his latest coming against Arsenal with a superb turn and a smart finish past David Ospina.

After such an impressive goal, Newcastle fans took to Twitter to comment on Doumbia’s strike, with many wondering just why he wasn’t given more playing time under McClaren or then Rafael Benitez last season.

Others noted that that Doumbia’s spell at St. James’ Park was ‘strange’, with some making tongue-in-cheek comments about a January move from Newcastle to sign the 28-year-old attacker.
