Newcastle United have reportedly scouted Japan international Ritsu Doan ahead of the January transfer window.

A number of Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to comment on reports emerging from the Chronicle which have suggested that the Magpies are scouting Ritsu Doan ahead of the January window.

It appears that Rafa Benitez is facing another crucial winter at St James’ Park, and with speculation continuing regarding a potential takeover, it seems that he may be having to use all of his nous to boost his options.

One potentially cheap target he has his eye on is Doan. The Chronicle reports that the 20-year-old has been scouted by both Newcastle and Manchester City, and could be available for £1.7 million.

Doan – who plays for Groningen in the Eredivisie and made his international debut for Japan this year – has scored four goals and provided two assists in the top flight this season.

His versatility is clearly a key reason why Benitez is showing an interest. The youngster is already capable of playing anywhere in midfield and further forward. But he will seemingly have plenty to prove if he does arrive on Tyneside next month.

The fans have looked at his asking price and are already started to worry about how their January is going to play out. They feel underwhelmed by the prospect of signing Doan, but they do not appear to be surprised that Newcastle could be interested in a player who could cost less than £2 million.
