The Spaniard will remain as Newcastle United manager in the Championship.
Rafael Benitez tonight put pen to paper on a new contract to remain as Newcastle United manager.
The Spaniard re-committed his future to the North-East club until 2019 in a move which will please the vast majority of Magpies supporters.

Following the club’s relegation from the Premier League this past season, it was suggested that Benitez, a Champions League-winning manager, may not stay at St James’s Park.
But the former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid boss illustrated where his loyalties lie by committing himself to United for the foreseeable future.

Understandably, Newcastle fans rejoiced on Twitter upon learning of the news.
It won’t be easy, but Newcastle have a vastly experienced manager in tow and life in the Championship seems less daunting now than it might have when the Spaniard’s future was uncertain.
Plus, they thumped Spurs 5-1 on the final day of the Premier League season, so there may less of a fear factor there, too.

He still has Steve McClaren’s team more or less, so the focus for Benitez will now shift to figuring who goes, who stays and who comes in.
This is the first part of what could be a very busy summer at St James’s Park.
