Newcastle fans have been reacting on Twitter to reports recently coming from Turkish outlet Fotomac recently which suggested that the Magpies have been offered the chance to sign Martin Skrtel this summer.

Rafa Benitez is preparing his side for their second season back in the Premier League, and it is likely to be a summer where he feels a lot of pressure. Despite finishing 10th this past campaign, the Magpies spent much of the season amongst the discussion regarding the potential relegation candidates and the run of form to end the season was simply superb.

Benitez is not the kind of manager who will be interested in spending too long stabilising things at St James’ Park, and he will be hoping that the club back him in the transfer market with the kind of signings that help the club progress further.

And there are clear divisions amongst the supporters regarding whether Skrtel is the kind of signing who could potentially help Newcastle take a step forward after reports from Fotomac suggested that the Fenerbahce defender has been offered to the Magpies.

Skrtel – who played under Benitez at Liverpool – has one year left on his deal at Fener so is not likely to cost the earth if Newcastle showed any interest in actually pursuing a deal this summer. And that has left some supporters on social media suggesting that a move could be a smart idea given the experience that he will bring to the team.

Others however, are not at all convinced that Skrtel – who earns £60,000-a-week in Turkey, according to the Daily Record – is even an improvement on Benitez’s backup options at the club as he edges towards the twilight of his career, and they have urged the Magpies to not show any desire to make something happen during the coming months.

Here is the best of the reaction…
