Glasgow Rangers skipper James Tavernier is being linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer.
A number of Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react to reports from the Daily Mail over the weekend which claimed that Steve Bruce wants to bring Rangers captain James Tavernier back to St James’ Park this summer.
The Magpies are still awaiting their first signing following Bruce’s appointment as Rafa Benitez’s successor. But with a number of areas arguably in need of strengthening, the Toon Army will be hoping that there will soon be some significant movement in the transfer market.
And the Daily Mail has suggested that one of the players that Newcastle want is Tavernier, with the Gers reportedly likely to listen to offers of around £8 million for the right-back.
Tavernier – who began his career on Tyneside but left having only made 10 senior appearances for Newcastle – has been a fantastic signing for the Scottish Premiership side, scoring 43 goals in 197 games in all competitions.
He went into this summer off the back of arguably his best season with Rangers yet, having proved to be a brilliant leader for Steven Gerrard’s men. It would be a huge blow for the Gers to lose him this summer.
But despite his form in Scotland, links with Tavernier have only attracted a mixed response from some of the Newcastle fans on social media. A number of supporters have concerns about his defensive ability – which is a worry that has been shared by some Rangers fans in the past – while others are not convinced that he is good enough for the Premier League.
But there are also plenty of fans who believe that he would be a very good addition to Bruce’s squad, with those supporters feeling confident that he is better than both DeAndre Yedlin and Javier Manquillo.
