Jonjo Shelvey suggested that he has no plans to leave Newcastle United this summer.
A number of Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react to Jonjo Shelvey’s comments – which have been reported by the Chronicle – in which he insisted that he has no plans to leave the Magpies this summer.
Shelvey has had a mixed spell on Tyneside. He was outstanding during Newcastle’s most recent promotion-winning campaign, but has struggled to make a consistent impact in the Premier League despite producing occasional moments of brilliance.
The 27-year-old played more of a peripheral role last season, and the Chronicle reports that he has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park. But Shelvey has put to bed any suggestion that he could be on the move during this window.
“I won’t be leaving this club,” he said, as reported by the Chronicle. “I don’t know who wants me to leave or stay but as far as I am concerned I am at Newcastle United.
“I am not looking to go anywhere.”
Of course, Shelvey’s future will still be somewhat unclear while the club are still waiting to appoint Rafa Benitez’s successor. But it would be no surprise if the next manager was keen to hold onto the former Liverpool man.
The midfielder’s comments have largely been met with a positive reaction from the fans. There are plenty who feel that Shelvey has the potential to reestablish himself as a key man in the Newcastle side from next season, and others are happy to hear him commit to staying.
There are some fans who are much more underwhelmed following Shelvey’s comments as they feel that he needs to do a lot more, but the reaction has generally been extremely positive.
