It may end up an extremely positive season for Newcastle United, but for Jacob Murphy, it is likely that this campaign will go down as something of a disappointment – with his latest performance attracting plenty of criticism from the Magpies fans on Twitter.

Rafa Benitez’s men were assured of safety heading into the game with Watford, and their knowledge of that fact seemed to be apparent in the way that they played as they went into the break 2-0 down at Vicarage Road.

Newcastle improved significantly in the second-half, but were unable to turn the game around after Ayoze Perez handed them a lifeline 10 minutes after the break – and that goal came two minutes after Murphy had been taken off after an underwhelming performance.

Unfortunately for Murphy, it has been an incredibly difficult first year at St James’ Park where he has certainly not lived up to the £12 million price-tag – fee reported by Sky Sports. And the display against the Hornets seemed to sum up his season perfectly.

Many felt that Benitez was right to take him off just eight minutes into the second-half, and some are suggesting that it may be time to cut their losses and consider moving him on in the summer, perhaps on loan.
