Newcastle United have been relegated from the Premier League and will play in the Championship next season.
Newcastle United fans have taken to social networking site Twitter to give their reaction to recent controversial comments made by Freddy Shepherd.
The former Newcastle chairman suggested that manager Rafael Benitez has to share the blame for the club’s relegation to the Championship.
Shepherd also suggested that the Magpies should return the services of managing director Lee Charnley.
“I hope Lee Charnley doesn’t leave because he’s a great guy and a good administrator…but it’s no good just having an inquest – what good will that do?” the Englishman told talkSPORT. “You’ve got to look forward, not in the past. Newcastle have to move on.”
“I think it’ll be difficult keeping him there,” Shepherd added about Benitez. “The money will be an issue, of course. Top managers won’t work for nothing. But with just two wins in ten games – I think he’s got to look at himself as well.”
Benitez was appointed the Newcastle manager in March following the departure of Steve McClaren.
The Spaniard failed to prevent the Magpies from getting relegated to the Championship, but under him the fans could at least hope for survival in the English top flight.
It was clear that McClaren was taking Newcastle down, and appointing Benitez gave the team and the supporters a small chance.
Performances in some matches were encouraging, and so were the results, and it is a bit strange that Shepherd is critical of the former Chelsea and Liverpool manager.
