Antonio Barreca was missing from Newcastle United’s squad for their latest Premier League clash.

A number of Newcastle fans on Twitter were left baffled after Antonio Barreca was left out of the Magpies squad for their Premier League clash with Wolves on Monday night.
Barreca was one of two players that Rafa Benitez managed to bring through the St James’ Park door during the January transfer window. But while Miguel Almiron was handed a place on the bench for the game at Molineux, Barreca was nowhere to be seen.
The 23-year-old got the chance to make his Newcastle debut earlier in the month as he came on for the final few minutes of the side’s 1-0 defeat away at Tottenham Hotspur.
But he did not keep his place for the game against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, with the Chronicle reporting that the decision to leave Barreca out of the squad was tactical and not down to an injury.

Unsurprisingly, the news has worried plenty of Newcastle fans on social media. With the Magpies so quiet in January in terms of the number of signings that they made, the supporters would have been hoping that their additions could make a big impact.
Of course, the greater pressure is on Almiron. But Barreca missing out on Monday has left several supporters feeling extremely pessimistic about how good a signing he is going to prove to be, especially given the players that Benitez had selected ahead of him for the trip to Wolves.

Here is how some of the fans reacted to Barreca’s absence…
