A number of Newcastle fans have taken to social media to comment on recent reports coming from Uruguayan outlet Ovacion which have suggested that the Magpies are interested in signing Abel Hernandez this summer.

Rafa Benitez’s men have all but secured another year in the Premier League with Newcastle 12 points clear of Southampton with just four games remaining in the top flight. It is remarkable achievement given that Benitez has hardly been able to capture the imagination during either of the last two transfer windows.

Unsurprisingly, it appears that the Spaniard is already eyeing potential summer targets with Ovacion suggesting that Benitez has his eye on Hernandez, who looks set to leave Hull City when his contract expires in the coming weeks.

The 27-year-old has a decent record in the Championship this season considering that he has spent most of it on the sidelines due to injury. He has scored eight goals in 10 league appearances for the Tigers, so there is certainly an argument to suggest that he may be worth on a punt on a free transfer.

In fact, there are some supporters who feel that signing Hernandez for nothing is a gamble worth taking despite his troubles with injuries and his somewhat underwhelming record at the highest level.

However, there are also some fans who are worried that interest in the Hull man is a sign that the club have not learned from the mistakes in previous windows and may spend much of the summer simply hunting potential bargains rather than adding serious quality.
