Newcastle fans have their say as Sunderland axe boss.

Chris Coleman, manager of Sunderland looks on ahead of the Sky Bet Championship match between QPR and Sunderland at Loftus Road on March 10, 2018 in London, England.

Newcastle United fans have expressed a mixture of amusement and surprise at the news Sunderland have sacked Chris Coleman.

Coleman was fired by Sunderland at the weekend, The Guardian reported, a week after their relegation to League One was confirmed.

A year ago Newcastle and Sunderland were just swapping places as the Black Cats were relegated to the Championship and the Toon rejoined the top flight.

Wales' manager Chris Coleman follows the game from the touchline during the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualification football match between Georgia and Wales in Tbilisi on October 6, 2017.

Sunderland fans had hoped they would bounce straight back to the Premier League but their season quickly unravelled.

Chris Coleman was hired mid-season as a replacement for Simon Grayson but neither could steady the ship despite possessing previously solid managerial CVs.

Coleman had been sought after following his achievements with Wales at international level, leading them to the Euro 2016 semi-finals.

After they missed out on World Cup qualification he returned to club football last November but was unable to prevent their slide into League One.

Predictably Newcastle fans are amused at Sunderland’s plight and lack of managerial stability.

Fans mocked their rivals for the decision… while ex-Toon boss Alan Pardew was even recommended as a possible replacement…
