Many Newcastle United fans have expressed their delight on Twitter after their former striker Daryl Murphy scored Nottingham Forest’s winner in their clash with Sunderland on Tuesday night.
Simon Grayson’s men desperately needed a positive result having lost their previous three Championship fixtures, conceding seven goals in that time.
Forest may have appeared to be a good opponent for the Black Cats given their inconsistency this season, as they went into the contest having won three and lost three of their opening six games.
Despite putting pressure on, Sunderland struggled to create any clear cut chances and they were punished by a striker, who they know very well, in the dying minutes at the Stadium of Light.
Murphy scored the only goal in the 86th minute as he drove past the Sunderland defence and drilled a shot across the goalkeeper.
The news proved particularly sweet for Newcastle fans. Murphy spent five years on Sunderland’s books until 2010, and helped the Magpies secure promotion out of the second tier last season before being sold to Forest in the summer, so seeing him score against their bitter rivals – and his own former club – to leave them languishing close to the bottom three prompted plenty of discussion on social media.
