Newcastle have reportedly sent officials to Turkey in an attempt to secure a deal to sign Martin Skrtel.

Newcastle United have reportedly sent club officials to Turkey in a bid to complete a deal to sign Fenerbahce defender Martin Skrtel and form a reunion with Rafa Benitez – but Toon fans are not happy on Twitter.

The 33-year-old is expected to leave Turkish giants Fener this summer after failing to impress in the SuperLig throughout 2017-18, despite the club finishing second behind Galatasaray.

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is seen during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Chelsea at St. James Park on May 13, 2018 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Skrtel almost joined former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard at Rangers earlier this summer, but the Gers missed out on the Slovakia international as they could not afford his expensive wages – which the Daily Record claim are worth £60,000 a week.

Now, Turkish outlet A Spor claim Newcastle’s senior officials have travelled to meet Fenerbahce’s board members in a bid to complete a deal that would see former Liverpool defender Skrtel reunite with Benitez at St. James’ Park.

The Toon have plenty of options at centre-back, but both Jamaal Lascelles and Chancel Mbemba have been linked with moves away from St. James’ Park this summer.

Newcastle fans reacted to the report that the club had sent men to Turkey to discuss a transfer for Skrtel, with the majority believing that the club are indeed too good for Skrtel – and that their current options are better.
