But £5million summer signing Joselu missed a penalty in the first half with a tame effort, that saw Nick Pope keep the score deadlocked before he dragged a golden chance wide with honours even at 1-1.
It showed just why the Toon have been crying out for a new striker since the January transfer window began, in which they confirmed the loan capture of Leicester City forward Islam Slimani on deadline day.
Newcastle fans reacted to Joselu’s performance in frustration on Twitter, as as in-form striker would surely have taken one of his two outstanding opportunities to hand the Toon three points.
One fan even went as far as saying that 27-year-old Joselu makes him “miss Xisco”.
