Neither of Newcastle’s two top English stars made the squad for the upcoming friendlies, to the disbelief of a number of fans.

Newcastle United fans were left baffled on Thursday as both Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey missed out on the England squad.
The two Magpies have performed superbly in recent weeks – with Lascelles impressive throughout the season – but a number of underwhelming options were preferred.
Gareth Southgate did call up two debutants in the centre of defence with James Tarkowski and Alfie Mawson, but opted against adding Lascelles to the squad as well, calling up out-of-form Liverpool man Joe Gomez.

In midfield, Jake Livermore, struggling at the bottom of the table, was selected ahead of Shelvey.
It is safe to say Newcastle fans were not best pleased as they took to Twitter after the squad announcement…
With the World Cup now less than 100 days away, there seems very little chance that either player will come into the fold for the tournament.
Newcastle fans must hope Lascelles and Shelvey can stay patient and prove themselves in years to come, forcing England managers’ hands in future and representing the Magpies at international tournaments.
And now the pair must focus on a huge game against Huddersfield Town at the end of the month.
