Roeder, who managed the Magpies across 2006 and 2007, spoke on talkSPORT on Wednesday and defended the club’s much-maligned owner Mike Ashley.

The 63-year-old also claimed that United might be worse off with another owner, following the takeover talks in recent months.

If the Spaniard winds up quitting the club then Ashley will take much of the blame.
