Elias Sorensen scored again as Newcastle United’s under-21s won their latest Checkatrade Trophy clash.

A number of Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to plead with Rafa Benitez to hand Elias Sorensen a chance in the Magpies’ first-team after he continued his superb run of form in front of goal.
Sorensen is undoubtedly one of the most in-form players at St James’ Park this season. His goal to complete the 2-0 win over Notts County at Meadow Lane on Tuesday – which leaves Newcastle top of their Checkatrade Trophy pool three points clear of both Grimsby and Doncaster with one group-stage clash remaining – was his eighth in all competitions.
It was perhaps not one of his most memorable goals, but it was another reminder to Benitez that he may actually deserve the chance to move onto the first-team bench at some stage in the near future.
Newcastle have scored just six goals in eight Premier League games, with Joselu currently topping the scoring charts with two strikes to his name. Yoshinori Muto is the only other forward to score in the league this term.

Sorensen may not have the same quality as the likes of Salomon Rondon or Muto yet, but he is clearly playing with a lot of confidence right now, and many fans now feel that a gamble is worth taking.
It would definitely be a risk to hand Sorensen a chance, but it is already starting to appear that the Magpies may need to take a couple of risks to ensure that they stay up.

Here is how some of the Newcastle fans reacted to Sorensen’s display…
