Newcastle United have reportedly made an offer to sign AS Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca on a loan-to-buy deal before the end of the January window – and Toon fans are finally getting excited.

The Chronicle claimed on Wednesday that Thierry Henry is willing to let the 23-year-old defender leave Monaco, who have struggled this season and sit in 19th place in France’s top tier.

Reports and speculation of potential incomings at St. James’ Park have been rife since Rafa Benitez and owner Mike Ashley re-opened dialogue. Now, the club are said to have tabled an offer for Barreca.

Newcastle are likely to be after a new left-back this month as Paul Dummett continues to suffer from constant injuries – more specifically, his hamstring. It has seen Matt Ritchie play out of position at left-back of late.

A 13-time Italy Under-21 international, Barreca has only managed seven Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco this season, since joining the club from Italian Serie A side Torino last summer.

Newcastle fans reacted to the speculation over Barreca and amid the standard reaction of Newcastle fans being pessimistic over their club signing any new players – some were excited at the prospect of an exciting left-back in Barreca.
