Zajc is reportedly looking to leave Empoli, with Newcastle and Huddersfield said to be interested.
Newcastle United are reportedly rivalling Huddersfield Town in pursuit of Empoli midfielder Miha Zajc who is said to be keen to leave the Italian side – but Newcastle fans have reacted sarcastically on Twitter.
Italian outlet CalcioMercato claim both relegation-threatened Premier League sides are interested in the 24-year-old playmaker, who has a contract with the Serie A side until the summer of 2022.
But it is believed that nine-time Slovenia international Zajc wants to leave Empoli, with the breakthrough of teenager Hamed Junior Traore leaving him to contend with only substitute appearances.
A Slovenian champion during his time with NK Olimpija Ljubljana, Zajc is renowned for his dribbling, impeccable technique but perhaps most noticeably, his vision from attacking midfield.
This season, Zajc has created three goals and scored two himself – despite only starting of his 18 Serie A appearances and completing 90 minutes in those matches just four times.
The report claims that Zajc wants to leave Empoli, with the Italian side valuing him at just £5.4million. It is stated that a loan-to-buy deal could also be orchestrated between Empoli and interested parties.
Newcastle fans reacted to the latest transfer report, though, in sarcastic fashion. Many believe that Huddersfield would beat Newcastle to Zajc’s signature as owner Mike Ashley continues to frustrate the Toon in the market.
