Newcastle’s Under-21 side were battered 4-0 by Sunderland in the Checkatrade Trophy.
Newcastle United’s Under-21 side were beaten comfortably by bitter rivals Sunderland in the last 16 of the Checkatrade Trophy at the Stadium of Light – but Toon fans were impressed by midfielder Mo Sangare.
An own goal from Kelland Watts saw Sunderland take the lead just four minutes into the second half, before Cal Roberts should have perhaps equalised after good work from Elias Sorensen.
But Jack Ross’ Sunderland took advantage. Goals from target man Charlie Wyke, winger Chris Maguire and youngster Benjamin Mbunga-Kimpioka saw the Black Cats progress into the quarter-finals – knocking Newcastle out.
Fans were out in full force to watch the clash, with 2,800 Toon supporters making the short trip to Wearside to watch their club’s Under-21 side take on League One Sunderland.
Many were wowed by the performance of 20-year-old Sangare, who is a central midfielder renowned for his intricate array of passing but also his strength and his ability to read the game.
Sangare is a regular member of Newcastle’s Under-21 side and has clocked up 11 Premier League 2 appearances for the Toon this season. Newcastle fans were excited at the prospect of the young midfielder.
