Newcastle United have reportedly joined the chase to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.
Manchester United’s Chris Smalling
Newcastle United fans have been reacting on Twitter to the news coming from the Independent that suggested that Rafa Benitez was interested in signing Manchester United defender Chris Smalling this summer.
The Independent reports that Smalling is expecting to leave Old Trafford during the coming months having fallen out of favour with Jose Mourinho, and has a host of Premier League clubs chasing his signature.

Along with Everton and West Ham, the Independent reports that the Magpies are keen on offering Smalling a way out of the club as they prepare for their return to the top flight.
The Independent adds that Smalling’s £100,000 a week wages are likely to prove a stumbling block to any of the clubs who are interested in signing him this summer, but it appears that most Newcastle fans would be willing to see a large outlay spent on winning the race for the centre-back.

Smalling is a vastly experienced defender who has won a fair amount of trophies during his career, but is still young enough at 27 to potentially play at the highest level for a number of years yet.
And while some were not impressed by the links, the general consensus amongst those who have taken to social media is that a move for Smalling would be an excellent piece of business for the club.
