The Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper has signed a new four-year contract at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle United’s 2015/16 Player of the Season Rob Elliot has committed his future to the club by signing a new four-year deal.
The Republic of Ireland international is nearing a return to full fitness following a cruciate ligament injury that kept him out of the Magpies final Premier League matches and Ireland’s Euro 2016 squad.
The 30-year-old stopper joined United from Charlton Athletic in 2011 and went on to make 48 first team appearances as second choice goalkeeper to Tim Krul.

But with the Dutch international now out on loan to Ajax, Elliot is expected to be manager Rafa Benitez’s number one choice in between the sticks one he returns from injury.
New signing Matz Sels has been filling in for Elliot during the opening Championship matches as Newcastle currently sit fourth in the table after winning their previous three consecutive matches.
Last season Elliot was Newcastle’s stand-out player, making a number of stunning saves has he single handedly kept his side in a number of Premier League matches.

Ultimately his efforts proved futile as United were relegated from the top flight following the injury.
But now the future looks bright under Rafa Benitez as the goalkeeper told nufc.co.uk: “I’m delighted. Personally, I had a good run in the team last year but I was obviously gutted at the end with the injury so it’s a real confidence-booster that the Club have put their faith in me.”
