Newcastle United fans have reacted positively to a tweet from Paul Dummett, a player Eddie Howe thinks very highly of.

The Newcastle-born defender joined the club as a youth player and has been there ever since, apart from loan spells at Gateshead and St Mirren around a decade ago.

Therefore, the fact that he’s only made 201 senior appearances may be a little surprising.

His total would be higher but for a number of serious injuries, the most recent of which saw him miss the entire first half of the season.

Dummett returned to training in December, though, and now, his return to action looks to be imminent.

He was an unused substitute for the Magpies’ shock FA Cup defeat to Cambridge United last weekend and after getting another full week of training under his belt, he’s made it clear that he’s raring to go.

Dummett ‘ready’ for Newcastle return

The 30-year-old posted a photo of him being put through his paces in training on Twitter on Thursday and captioned it ‘ready’ along with black, white and muscle emojis.

The tweet went down very well with Newcastle fans, many of whom commented expressing their joy that Dummett’s return is imminent.

Here’s a selection of reactions:

Dummett is an option for Howe at centre-back and left-back and based on comments made by the manager in late 2021, he’s likely to be used regularly now that he’s back fit.

“He will be an important player,” he said, as quoted by Chronicle Live. “I’ve always liked him.”

Newcastle have been busy during the early stages of the transfer window, securing both Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Now, it’s time to start putting points on the board, and a home fixture against Watford on Saturday afternoon presents a great opportunity to do just that.

Dummett will be hoping to play some role in the match and the Magpies defence is in desperate need of shoring up after conceding 12 goals in their last four outings.
