Newcastle United were humiliated by Championship side Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night as their poor start to the season continues under Rafa Benitez – and some fans have blasted Fabian Schar’s performance.

Former Newcastle striker Daryl Murphy opened the scoring for Forest inside the first two minutes, after excellent work from West Ham United loanee Sam Byram on the right flank that even included a nutmeg on Kenedy.

Schar, 26, was caught on the back foot, allowing Murphy to get across him. It remained that way until the 92nd minute, when new signing Salomon Rondon struck a ferocious effort into the bottom corner to score his first Toon goal.

With the game looking as though it would go to penalties, Forest scored in the 94th and 96th minute. Matty Cash scored first after Schar failed to close down the cross, before Kenedy gifted Gil Dias with an easy opportunity to score.

Switzerland international Schar was playing in only his second match for Newcastle, after featuring for 79 minutes of the 2-1 loss to Chelsea but fans will be hoping to see a lot more from their £3.5million summer signing from Deportivo.

Indeed, some Newcastle fans blasted the World Cup defender on Twitter, with many frustrated that he struggled to cope with target man Murphy with some basic, schoolboy errors when it comes to defending.
