Joey Barton has had plenty to say about Newcastle United this week. He spoke to the Chronicle Live about many different subjects, including his past at Newcastle. He discussed the infamous 4-4 draw with Arsenal on the anniversary of the event and Mike Ashley.

Barton has a well known rather difficult relationship and opinion of the Newcastle owner. He told the Chronicle:

“Steve McClaren wanted me to go back. That was the year I joined Burnley – he asked me to come back but Mike Ashley said you can have anybody but him!

“It was good to know I made that an impression on him (Ashley) because the feeling is definitely mutual.”

Ashley is a fairly unpopular figure at Newcastle after his controversial running of the club over the years. In fact, Barton once could have re-signed for the club as Steve McClaren wanted him, but was told that was not going to happen by the powers at be.

Newcastle have recently been linked with a takeover bid from a group led by businesswoman Amanda Staveley with Barton clearly one man who would be keen to see that happen.

Barton himself is currently without a club as he serves an FA ban for betting on games but could return to the footballing fold in the years to come.

Judging by the reactions to his recent comments from fans on Twitter St James’ Park is one place he will definitely be welcomed back:
