Newcastle fans are amused at the amount Sunderland were bought for.

Sunderland fans celebrate during the Barclays Premier League match between Sunderland and Everton at the Stadium of Light on May 11, 2016 in Sunderland, England.

Sunderland’s takeover was completed last night with the club now proclaimed to be debt free.

A consortium led by Stewart Donald paid £40 million to Ellis Short to get control of the Black Cats.

Donald told SkySports: “We have given Ellis £40million. That’s the deal price. His debt, he’s now tied it up – and that’s now gone from the football club, and it’s not been ported to us. The reality is Sunderland is debt-free.”

Sunderland are now a League One club, much to the amusement of Newcastle fans.

Newcastle fans were mocked when Sunderland helped relegate them in 2016, but Newcastle bounced straight back to the Premier League and stayed in the top flight, while their rivals suffered shocking back to back relegations.

The joke is very much on Sunderland, and Newcastle fans are amused at the fact ‘just’ £40 million was paid for the club, two seasons after the Toon managed to receive £30 million for one of their players, Moussa Sissoko.

This is going to be a chastening season for Sunderland, who must get used to the reality of the challenge in League One.

If Newcastle proved anything, it is that the tables can turn so very quickly.

Sunderland can’t do much about Newcastle’s trajectory, but they can handle their own business and must begin by winning promotion.

Ultimately it does not matter how much Stewart Donald and co paid for them, their value has been depreciated by back to back relegations in any case.

Less money paid by the new owners, is more that is left to invest in the squad to help them try and bounce back.
