Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Espanyol superstar Raul de Tomas, a striker Arsenal were seemingly desperately tried to sign in January.

According to Relevo via GSFN, the Toon have added the Spanish attacker to their shortlist this summer, with Juventus also interested in signing Tomas, who in the winter transfer window was a target for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal as the north London side searched high and low for a new striker.

As per reports, the £60m-valued striker was heavily targeted by Arsenal, who despite plenty of interest never made an official move for the La Liga star, who last season was one of the best strikers in the division and one of Spain’s stand-out performers in all of Europe.

And now, Newcastle are reportedly in to sign Tomas, who this summer is allowed to leave Espanyol following a career-best season with the Barcelona-based club, with Eddie Howe keen to bring in a new star attacker for the northeast Premier League side.

The Magpies have been active in the window this summer signing Nick Pope from Burnley and Sven Botman from LOSC Lille, and after these two exciting additions, Newcastle have now seemingly turned their attention to the forward position, with Tomas a target for the English side.

Indeed, with 17 league goals for the Catalan side, Tomas would be an excellent signing for Newcastle, but with interest from Juventus this summer, the Toon could struggle to land the 27-year-old Spanish international, who could favour a move to Turin.

Newcastle’s new status as one of the richest organisations in sport makes them an ideal destination for many footballers, yet for Tomas, signing for the Premier League side with Juventus in the picture would be an odd career decision for the Spaniard.

After all, Newcastle are some years away from even competing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, let alone win silverware, and Tomas would likely rather play for a club like Juventus in the peak of his career rather than risk a safe move to the Magpies for the coming years.
