Premier League outfit Newcastle United considered signing Gamid Agalarov in the January transfer window with the Ufa striker currently the top scorer in Russia, as reported by Sport24

The 21-year-old hadn’t even scored a top-flight goal before the start of the 2021/22 RPL season. It’s safe to say he’s put that right.

No one has found the net quite so prolifically as Agalarov this term. He has 18 in 24 starts, turning the Golden Boot battle into something of a one-horse race.

And Agalarov’s career-best tally looks even more impressive when you consider that Ufa are only one point off the bottom of the table.

What’s more, the Russia U21 international has scored all but seven of Ufa’s 25 league goals. Needless to say, he’ll take some replacing.

Newcastle United target a striker

“I know that big clubs are following Gamid,” says Shamal Gazizov, the club’s general director, via Vedomosti Sport. “It will be possible to discuss this in detail after the season. Let’s wait. We are in touch with scouts.”

Gazizov refutes suggestions that Agalarov will be available for as little as £10 million but he does admit that offers will be considered for one of Russian football’s breakthrough stars.

“For us, the sale of football players is an important part of our economic model,” Gazizov adds. “Every year. we sell players. We will continue to work in the same vein, and adhere to self-sufficiency.”

Nouveau-riche Newcastle will not struggle to meet Ufa’s asking price. That’s if they renew their interest who’s registered five goals in his last six games.

Sport24 claim that Newcastle showed an interest in Agalarov in the winter, albeit without putting a concrete offer on the table.

“Gamid wants to play in a good team,” Agalarov’s father admits. “Yes, we want to try our hand at a new team. But most of it depends on the club (Ufa).”

Newcastle might have money to burn these days but their transfer policy is reported to revolve around talented youngsters with their best years ahead of them. Hugo Ekitike, Sven Botman and Carlos Daniel, for instance.

At 21, Agalarov fits the mould.
