Chelsea want Rayan Cherki but Newcastle United are expected to launch a move for the Lyon playmaker.

Newcastle United could make a serious push to sign Lyon talent Rayan Cherki amid links to Chelsea.

That is according to Foot Mercato, who report that Lyon are under financial pressure this summer.

Defender Castello Lukeba looked to be on his way to RB Leipzig but Lyon may keep him because they can’t find a replacement in their budget.

There is a chance that other players are sold with veteran Alexandre Lacazette and youngster Bradley Barcola wanted.

Then there is Cherki, with the report suggesting that he could be the source of a ‘major’ transfer push from Newcastle.

Newcastle were heavily linked with Cherki in June as But! Football Club reported that the Magpies were eyeing a move.

The rumour is back once again and Newcastle could battle Chelsea for Cherki’s signature.

Chelsea are trying to sign Rayan Cherki

TEAMtalk reported just a few days ago that Chelsea are interested in signing Lyon ace Cherki this summer.

It was suggested that the Blues have already held talks over a potential deal to sign Cherki.

The 19-year-old is understood to want the move to Chelsea as he could reunite with ex-Lyon teammate Malo Gusto.

Chelsea are always shopping around for top young talents and Cherki would certainly fit the bill.

If Newcastle are going to make their move for Cherki, they may need to do it very quickly with Chelsea seemingly leading the race.

We can’t see Newcastle moving for Cherki

Maybe Newcastle are interested in Cherki – that would certainly be understandable.

Hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Lyon boss Laurent Blanc, Cherki is immensely skilful and bagged four goals as well as six assists in Ligue 1 last season.

Cherki is still a little raw and only started 21 league games last season but the talent is clear to see.

The reason we’re not sure about a Newcastle move is because the Magpies have just spent big cash on Sandro Tonali and could sign Harvey Barnes too.

That’s considerable outlay and Newcastle may need to raise funds with some sales before going for another big signing.

That may leave Chelsea ahead for Cherki, with the Blues no doubt hoping to make sure Newcastle don’t pip them in the race.
