Back in 2020, Thierry Henry said it was a “no-brainer” to sign Djordje Mihailovic for Montreal Impact – and now, 11 European clubs are reportedly interested in him, including Leeds, Everton and Newcastle.
Mihailovic, 23, joined Montreal when Henry was still in charge of the MLS side. Henry left before the 2021 MLS campaign started, meaning he never actually got to play a competitive match with the Arsenal legend in charge.
But that did not stop the six-time USA international shining for Montreal last season. Playing 34 times, he scored four goals and and laid on 14 more assists. He largely played as an attacking midfielder, but slightly deeper.
Jeunes Footeux claim Leeds, Everton and Newcastle are all keen as well as Leverkusen, Dortmund, Nice, Bologna, Atalanta, Roma and two unnamed French sides. Henry said in 2020, it was a “no-brainer” to bring him in.
Henry on Montreal star Mihailovic: Leeds, Everton or Newcastle?
The arrival of Jesse Marsch at Leeds surely hands them the best chance of landing the USA star. Having an ex-MLS gaffer in Marsch, who managed Montreal and New York Red Bulls, and an American, puts Leeds on pole.
Leeds also want Brenden Aaronson, a player that played under Marsch at Salzburg. But Marsch is known for liking plenty of options – and Bielsa’s squad is threadbare. A bit of depth with Mihailovic would be a boost.
Everton have Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek on board – and a permanent deal could happen for the latter. Newcastle could do with a player like Mihailovic, but they are likely to go after a bigger profile. Leeds is perfect.
