Newcastle United allegedly hit problems in their move for Joelinton last week.

Joelinton of TSG Hoffenheim looks on during the Bundesliga match between TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and Bayer 04 Leverkusen at PreZero-Arena on March 29, 2019 in Sinsheim, Germany.

Newcastle United broke their transfer record for the second time in 2019 on Tuesday, securing the signing of Hoffenheim striker Joelinton.

The Magpies needed to get in a new striker having seen Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez go, and Steve Bruce has been backed with a big-money addition.

Brazilian hitman Joelinton, 22, arrives having hit seven goals and five assists last season, and The Guardian reporting that the fee involved was £40million – almost twice Newcastle’s last record, which was set with Miguel Almiron’s move in January.

It’s an exciting addition for Newcastle, and they’ll be hoping to see the physical centre forward replace Rondon’s goals, but also his work rate in the final third.

What’s interesting is that Newcastle confirmed Joelinton has signed a staggering six-year deal, committing his future to the Magpies until 2025 in the process.

Sport1 in Germany claimed last week that Newcastle’s move for Joelinton had hit a problem, in that the striker only wanted a three-year deal, whereas the club wanted to give him a four-year contract instead.

Newcastle completely ended concerns, and proved that report wrong, by announcing a long-term deal for Joelinton, beyond what that report had even claimed.

That a young, promising, big-money striker has signed such a long-term deal is a major boost for Newcastle and a sign that they really can compete in the transfer market, even if they have been dormant this summer until now.
