Tiote, whose volley helped the Magpies secure a 4-4 draw with Arsenal in 2011, tragically passed away in 2017.

On this day in 2011, Newcastle United produced arguably one of the greatest comebacks in Premier League history when they came from four goals down to secure a 4-4 draw against Arsenal.
The Gunners enjoyed a blistering start at St James Park as Theo Walcott opened the scoring in the first minute and Johan Djourou headed home on three minutes, before Robin van Persie bagged a quickfire brace for a seemingly insurmountable advantage come the half-hour mark.
Many Magpies fans would have been forgiven for anxiously expecting a cricket scoreline after the restart but two Joey Barton penalties either side of a Leon Best strike from inside the area had the hosts on the verge of an amazing comeback.
Three minutes from time, Cheick Tiote struck a stunning volley from long range into the bottom-left corner of Arsenal’s net to raise the St James’ Park roof off, capping off one of English football’s all-time classic matches.
Tragically, Tiote passed away in June 2017 aged 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest during training for Chinese team Beijing Enterprises.
On the eight-year anniversary of the match between Newcastle and Arsenal, in which Tiote played a key role, Magpies goalkeeper Rob Elliot retweeted the club’s Twitter clip of the game and paid tribute to his former teammate:
Some Toon Army faithful responded to Elliot’s tweet and also paid their respects to Tiote:
