Corinthians midfielder Ederson has broken his silence on speculation linking him with a move to Premier League outfit Newcastle United, speaking to Meu Timao.

Jonjo Shelvey has always been a walking, talking, footballing enigma.

And, during yesterday’s 4-2 defeat to West Ham United at St James’ Park, the former England international offered a reminder as to why he’s one of the most divisive players in Newcastle’s recent history.

Some of Shelvey’s passes, particularly in the first half, were outstanding, piercing the lines time and again with the sort of inch-perfect through ball he has made his trademark during a decade in the Premier League.

There can be no doubting Shelvey’s ability on the ball. Off it, however, let’s just say the story’s different.

The 29-year-old spent most of the second half chasing shadows as West Ham ran riot. He lacks the energy or discipline to thrive in the number six role when up against technically gifted, spring-heeled players such as Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio.

No wonder Newcastle are looking at someone like Ederson, a combative number six who produces defensive numbers akin to that of Isaac Hayden.

Could Ederson replace Jonjo Shelvey or complement him at Newcastle?

According to Globo Esporte, Newcastle have made an enquiry about the 22-year-old, who has taken Brazilian football by storm since joining Fortaleza on loan in March.

“This question happens all the time – not just for me but for all players,” Ederson said when asked about the speculation.

“The window is open and, whoever is in good form, teams will probe (and make enquiries). But there’s no use if there’s nothing official.

“I have a contract (at Fortaleza) until the end of the year and, if there is a change, it will be good for me and the club.”

According to Meu Timao, Corinthians want to raise about £9 million via player sales, with Ederson one of their most sellable assets.
