Newcastle defender Matt Targett has told the Toon’s official website that the Everton crowd got their side over the line to pick up a crucial three points at Goodison Park. Alex Iwobi scored a 99th-minute winner on Thursday.
In what was an entertaining clash, the two sides could not find a breakthrough as Everton looked to keep relegation at bay with three points. They got their goal deep into injury time, after a protestor halted the game.
A lovely one-two with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, in which the England star backheeled into the path of Nigeria man Iwobi – gave the ex-Arsenal man a chance to lash home a left-footed effort, and Iwobi duly obliged.
Speaking after the game, a despondent Targett spoke to Newcastle’s media and gave his verdict on Everton fans – applauding the impact the Goodison atmosphere made on Newcastle’s opponents for the night.
“We didn’t start the second half as well as we could have, it gave the crowd a lift. To be fair, the crowd helped them a lot in the second half. They were good,” Targett told Newcastle’s official website.
Targett on Everton fans: Big loss for Newcastle, still in dogfight?
Thanks to their incredible recent run under Eddie Howe, Newcastle remain nine points above Watford. While Eddie Howe and the Toon players may continue to suggest they are in a relegation scrap, they are not.
They have nine games to play and if they can pick up two wins from the next possible 27 points, then they are safe. Newcastle should achieve that, though it will be frustrating to have lost to a side in the mix, in Everton.
