The Magpies midfielder, 21, has impressed since breaking into the senior team this Premier League season.

Newcastle United fans have endured a tough season for the most part but things are now looking up, with the Tyneside club sitting six points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

Although the Magpies lost their last league game, falling to a 2-0 loss at West Ham United, they’ve been more solid in recent weeks, winning four of their last seven league encounters (TWTD).

Coinciding with Newcastle’s upturn in form is the emergence of Sean Longstaff, the 21-year-old academy graduate who has burst onto the scene this term under Rafael Benitez, making nine league appearances so far (Transfermarkt).

Longstaff did not initially appear to be in his manager’s plans at the start of the campaign, but with certain players either being injured, out of form or otherwise unavailable, it opened the door for him in the first team, and he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

DeAndre Yedlin, one of Longstaff’s Newcastle teammates, has spoken about the youngster and he was not surprised at all about how impressive he’s been this term, sharing that he was one of the best players in pre-season.

“Everybody is sort of starting to see it in the public but we saw it in pre-season. He was one of the best players in pre-season,” the United States international is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying. “He’s done excellent. Credit to him. He’s a humble lad. He just keeps his head down and does the work that he needs to do and it is showing.”

On Wednesday, it was reported by the Shields Gazette that Longstaff has been to see a specialist amid fears he is facing an extended spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury.
