Newcastle United are facing a major blow ahead of Tuesday’s game against Everton with defender Dan Burn set to miss out through injury.

The Magpies host Everton on Tuesday night, playing for the first time since a hectic January transfer window closed.

Eddie Howe needs wins on the board to haul Newcastle clear of safety, and five January signings should help the cause.

Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have already featured, whilst there would be debuts for Matt Targett and Bruno Guimaraes against Everton.

Sadly for defender Burn, the new signing from Brighton and Hove Albion looks set to miss out against Everton.

Burn was pictured in training on Friday, seemingly gearing up for an emotional home debut on Tuesday night.

However, boss Howe has now told The Northern Echo that Burn is suffering from a toenail infection and is now a doubt to face Everton.

Howe doesn’t think this blow is ‘too serious’, but it can become a ‘big thing’ if not treated properly.

That means Newcastle won’t want to risk Burn playing in Tuesday’s game, knowing there is a risk that he could be out for even longer.

Burn cost £13million on deadline day, finalising a big move back to the North East.

Born in Blyth, Burn grew up supporting Newcastle and actually started his youth career in the Newcastle ranks before being released as a kid.

Now 29, Burn has established himself as a solid Premier League defender and Newcastle were hoping he would help them avoid relegation.

Burn seemingly won’t be able to get started on Tuesday night, but the hope is that leaving him out tomorrow will lead to him being available soon.
