According to The Sun, Newcastle United are eyeing up a free transfer move for Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba this summer.
The new ownership at Newcastle have thus far refrained from signing any superstar names, but there’s no doubt that Pogba would be the biggest signing the St James’ Park outfit have made in 15 years.
Due to Mike Ashley’s ownership, Newcastle haven’t signed a true superstar since Michael Owen’s arrival back in 2005.
Regardless of how his St James’ Park career went, Owen arrived as an absolute world-beater, he was England’s first-choice number nine, a Ballon d’Or winner and he was arriving from Real Madrid.
Since then, Newcastle haven’t signed a player of this ilk, but if they get Pogba, that would represent the first true superstar signing on Tyneside since Owen.
Make no mistake about it, Pogba would be a bona fide blockbuster signing. He’s a World Cup winner and at one point he was the most expensive player in footballing history after his £89m move from Juventus to United.
His contract is up in the summer, and while he would cost Newcastle £0 in transfer fees, he would still be the biggest signing the Magpies have made in well over a decade.
Whether or not you like Pogba as a player, you have to admit that the Frenchman heading to St James’ Park would be a huge statement of intent from the Magpies and it would once again show that they’re ready to compete at the very top-end of the transfer market after years in the wilderness.
