Speculation is mounting that Newcastle United want to sign Ismaila Sarr.
The Senegal international is once again being linked with a transfer away from relegation-threatened Watford this summer.
And Calciomercato in Italy have named Newcastle as a potential destination, albeit with AC Milan reportedly winning the race to sign him.
But the Magpies’ supporters should be excited by the possibility of bringing the jet-heeled winger to St James’s Park.
And definitely based on what Gary Neville once said about him.
Back in 2020, the Sky Sports pundit lavished praise on the 24-year-old – who cost the Hornets £40 million – and said he’d hate to play against a player with that much pace.
Here’s what Neville said: “He’s a big, big talent, honestly he really is. I always think, particularly as a wide player, what would I have not wanted to have played against? The first thing is pace. And then you’ve got to think about, can he use his pace? Well yes he can, because he makes really good quality runs: the spin in behind, straight, but also the run inside in between full-back and centre-back – which I always think is the most difficult to mark.”
There’s no doubt that Newcastle can afford players like this.
It goes without saying that if Watford go down – and they’re 19th in the Premier League standings – then the Hornets won’t be able to demand top dollar for the player.
However, Saudi Public Investment Fund are wealthy enough to ensure that players like Sarr can be easily obtained if they make sense for Eddie Howe’s outfit – and this transfer does make sense.
The Magpies need another player like Allan Saint-Maximin on the opposite flank and based on Neville’s comments, well the Tyneside club could be getting a frightening player.
